House Budget Committee Calls for Elimination of National Service

The House Budget Committee issued a budget resolution for FY17 and released an accompanying budget report. For the sixth year in a row, the House budget report calls for the complete defunding of the Corporation for National and Community Service, AmeriCorps, and Senior Corps to achieve budget savings.

The budget report does not carry the weight of law, but serves as a set of recommendations for federal funding for the coming fiscal year. Over the next few months, House and Senate appropriators will work to determine FY17 funding levels for national service and other federal programs.

The proposed defunding of CNCS directly opposes what the American people want.  A recent poll conducted by Republican polling firm TargetPoint shows that 83 percent of American voters across nine presidential battleground states want Congress to increase or maintain the current federal investment in CNCS.  This includes 78 percent of Republicans, 84 percent of Independents, and 90 percent of Democrats polled.
