AmeriCorps Committees Set for 118th Congress

The start of the 118th Congress, as the Senate has moved into a Democratic majority and the House has moved into a Republican majority, has led to a shake-up in the leadership and membership of the committees that are responsible for AmeriCorps funding and policies.

One of the most important committees for AmeriCorps is the Appropriations Committee, which allocates federal funds to government agencies and departments on an annual basis. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) and Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) have advanced to become Chair and Ranking Chair (respectively) of the Senate Committee on Appropriations. In the House of Representatives, former Ranking Chair Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX) has moved into the leadership position, and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) is now the Ranking Member.

The AmeriCorps agency, still referred to as the Corporation for National and Community Service, falls under the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS) Appropriations Subcommittee. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) is the new Chairwoman of the Senate subcommittee, replacing Sen. Murray, and Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) is the ranking member, replacing Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO), who retired at the end of the last Congress. Rep. DeLauro remains the Democratic leader of the House Labor-HHS Subcommittee, but Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-AL) has been named the new Subcommittee Chair in the House. These are significant changes at the top of the powerful Labor-HHS Subcommittee which is responsible for drafting and passing the largest nondefense discretionary spending bill.

New members on the Labor-HHS Subcommittees include Sen. John Boozman (R-AR), Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL), Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID), Rep. Julia Letlow (R-LA), and freshmen legislators Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA), Rep. Jake LaTurner (R-KS), Rep. Jake Ellzey (R-TX), and Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ).
