Statement by AnnMaura Connolly on the Passing of Senator Harris Wofford

Washington, DC – AnnMaura Connolly, President of Voices for National Service, issued the following statement upon the passing of Harris Wofford on January 21, 2019:

“Last night, fittingly on Martin Luther King Day, we lost one of the brightest lights in American life.

Harris Wofford was a boundless spirit, a brilliant mind, a restless agitator for justice and a loyal and loving friend. He had extraordinary roles in nearly every important movement of the last 75 years. From civil rights to education to national service, as a U.S. Senator, a public servant and a private citizen, Harris relentlessly pushed his beloved country to deliver the promise of America for all.

Working with Harris was an exhilarating experience, full of genius and creativity. Being his friend was one of the greatest gifts of my life.

The national service community mourns our hero and our co-conspirator. We commit to carrying forward his legacy so that one day soon every American will be asked and given the opportunity to serve. We will never forget Harris, and together we will work to form the more perfect union to which he dedicated his remarkable life.”
